The 500 Club supports Aspire

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’re probably familiar with our nationwide networking event, The 500 Club.

If you’re just now stepping into our world, The 500 Club is a series of informal networking events jointly hosted by ESA Risk, litigation funders Asertis, and property audit and consultancy firm CAPA. The aim of which is to bring together like-minded professionals from the legal, insolvency, finance and related sectors for drinks, nibbles and, most importantly, good conversation.

Our combined networking venture has grown exponentially since it’s inception, so this year we sought to utilise our expanding platform to cast a spotlight on something other than our professional network; the commendable work carried out by Aspire.

Aspire is a national charity dedicated to providing practical assistance to individuals who have suffered paralysis due to Spinal Cord Injury. Such an injury can occur unexpectedly to anyone, drastically altering their lives. In the absence of a cure, Aspire’s mission is crucial.

With a variety of projects and initiatives, Aspire extends practical support to around 105,000 individuals in the UK living with a Spinal Cord Injury. This support spans from the initial hospitalisation of new spinal injury patients and continues throughout their lives, enabling them to live independent and fulfilling lives at home, with their families, in their workplaces, and through leisure activities.

“We are very proud to support Aspire, in what is a very important charity. Life changes in a heartbeat for some people who sustain spinal injuries, so to give advanced rehabilitation and then independence is a great gift to give.” – Gareth Fitzgerald, CAPA.

Then

Aspire was founded in 1983 with the mission of improving rehabilitation facilities for people with spinal injuries, in response to the need for better rehabilitation equipment at the London Spinal Unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.

The charity’s initial vision rapidly expanded, leading to the construction of a new rehabilitation unit next to the spinal unit, designed by Andrew Walker, an architect who was a wheelchair user due to a Spinal Cord Injury.

In 1998 a major extension that included a wheelchair-accessible swimming pool and other facilities, was added. The Centre was more recently renamed the Aspire Leisure Centre.

Aspire has a longstanding relationship with the world of insolvency and restructuring, beginning in the early 2000’s with the first Aspire Sports Quiz Dinner – the brainchild of leading insolvency professional Alan Bloom, and his wife Gilly.

Today, the London event is still a staple in the diaries of almost all leading firms in the industry.

Now

The connection between Aspire and The 500 Club is further personified through Brian Carlin, a valued 500 Club member known for his dynamic presence and participation in events nationwide. His involvement highlights a shared bond within our community, bringing together individuals passionate about nurturing a difference in the lives of others.

“I remember first meeting Brian at one of our events at Davy’s Bunghole Cellars in London. Brian was always going to stick in my memory, as it’s usual to meet insolvency practitioners, solicitors, barristers, finance and property professionals at our events, but Brian is the first and only charity CEO we’ve hosted.

Brian was kind enough to return the hosting favour and invite me to Aspire’s flagship Sport Quiz Dinner at Lord’s Cricket Ground a couple of years ago. Even more generously, Brian seated me at the top table – despite that meaning he had to find a seat elsewhere – which gave me the opportunity to speak to some of the people directly affected by spinal cord injury and supported by Aspire. ‘Incredible’ and ‘inspiring’ can be overused terms, but I cannot think of better descriptions for the stories I heard that evening.

At that point, it was clear to me that Aspire would be an excellent choice for The 500 Club’s chosen charity. I’m very pleased that we made that a reality this year, and I always enjoy catching up with Brian at our events and hearing about the charity’s successes and plans.” – Liam Geoghegan, ESA Risk.

Though ESA Risk is no stranger to fundraising, as some of you may remember our Managing Director, Mike Wright drove to Chernivtsi in Ukraine to deliver Christmas presents and humanitarian aid to children housed across three orphanages and more than 20 shelters, raising over £30,000 in the process. Or ESA Risk consultant, Mario Ovsenjak, raising £4,500 for Cancer Research UK through participating in two charity boxing matches.

However, this is the first time we’ve pooled our efforts as the hosts of a networking community.

“It is a privilege and an honour to have Aspire, which supports the 105,000 people living in the UK who have been paralysed by a spinal cord injury to live independent lives, as our chosen charity.” – Roger Dugan, Asertis.

How

With multiple fundraising opportunities throughout the year, and a keen focus on sponsored swimming, running and cycling challenges, Aspire and it’s supporters remain dedicated to their vision of inclusivity and independence for all those affected by Spinal Cord Injury.

Some of their upcoming 2024 fundraising events include:

Aspire Sports Quiz Dinner

The Aspire Sports Quiz Dinner is making a grand return to Manchester, after a six-year hiatus.

Set to take place on Thursday 14th November at The Lowry Hotel in Salford, this event promises an evening brimming with good food, competitive spirit, and a meaningful cause.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to support individuals impacted by spinal cord injuries while indulging in a drinks reception, a sumptuous three-course dinner, and engaging in a fully interactive sports quiz. This year, the quiz will be hosted by Aspire’s President, John Inverdale, with assistance from master quiz setter and BBC 5 Live’s Rob Nothman.

Moreover, the event opens doors for sponsorship opportunities and welcomes donations of raffle prizes to further support the cause.

For those interested in making a difference while enjoying an exciting night out, this is the perfect opportunity.

Aspire Channel Swim

For those who love a challenge, how about swimming the distance of the English Channel to support those affected by Spinal Cord Injury?

The Aspire Channel Swim event encourages participants to cover 22 miles — either solo or as part of a team — from 9th September to 2nd December 2024. This challenge is open to swimmers of all ages and fitness levels and can be completed in local pools, swimming lakes, or the sea for the more experienced.

By taking on this challenge, you’re not just aiming for personal achievement; you’re contributing to a vital cause.

“I’m delighted the 500 Club has chosen Aspire as their partner charity.  It’s an honour to have the support of ESA Risk, CAPA and Asertis, and to be invited to join the many networking events and meet so many amazing and interesting people.  This partnership will help strengthen our relationship with the Insolvency and Restructuring sector and provide additional support for our vital services to help spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.” – Brian Carlin, Aspire.

As we gear up for another year of giving back, we’re reminded why we do what we do. It’s all about community, kindness, and yes, the little bit of magic that happens when we come together for something bigger than ourselves.

So we call upon you — the reader, the professional, the philanthropist — seize this opportunity to participate, contribute, or spread the word. Every donation makes a difference for those living with Spinal Cord injury.

Thank you for your continued support and we’ll catch you at the next event!

Mike Wright to drive to Ukraine to deliver Christmas presents to children

As an investigator, I am no stranger to interesting phone calls with insolvency lawyers. However, I can safely say that Chris Keane (of Clarke Willmott) is the first to ask me to drive to a warzone to deliver Christmas presents.

I said yes, of course.

On 26th November 2023, we are due to travel to Chernivtsi in Ukraine to deliver Christmas presents and humanitarian aid to children housed across three orphanages and more than 20 shelters.

Making the return trip of around 3,250 miles from Manchester alongside me and Chris Keane will be Keir Merrick (also of Clarke Willmott), Niall McCulloch (Enterprise Chambers), Mark Jeffries (Camel and Rotary Club of Wakefield Chantry) and Nicholas Ellis (Ellis & Co Accountants).

Working with the Charitable Organization of the Chernivtsi Diocese, we will attempt to improve the quality of the lives of:

  • Over 250 children across three orphanages in and around Chernivtsi.
  • Over 500 displaced children that are currently being housed in temporary shelters across 23 parishes in the Chernivtsi region that may have lost one or both of their parents as a result of the war.

Prof. Mariia Fedoriak and Fr. Liubomyr Ivanochko, the directors of the charity in Chernivtsi, inform us it is critical that any aid arrives prior to 1st December 2023. After this date, new customs regulations come into effect in Ukraine and the charity cannot afford to pay the legal fees required to process the necessary paperwork to ensure the aid can get through prior to Christmas.

We are hoping to raise £30,000 in support of this cause. If you are able to, please donate via our Just Giving page.

In addition to any Christmas presents we may choose to take with us, the following items are desperately needed:

  • School supplies to include stationery, notepads, art and drawing materials etc.
  • School backpacks.
  • Sports equipment to include balls, nets, tables tennis equipment etc.
  • Children’s games (including a special request for large Lego or Duplo blocks for children with learning disabilities).
  • Hygiene products to include nappies, sanitary products, shampoo, deodorant, body wash, shower gel, toothbrushes etc.
  • Winter coats.
  • 20 – 30 tents and associated camping equipment such as sleeping bags, sleeping mats/airbeds, lamps etc. so they can be used for summer camps to take the children away from the orphanages/shelters for a much-needed break.
  • An off-grid solar power system to be installed at the remote summer camp the charity has currently been gifted the use of.

We will be taking a week away from our ordinary routines to make the trip through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania to reach Chernivtsi in the southwest of Ukraine, 25 miles from the border with Romania.

We currently have two vehicles in which to make the trip, but we would like to travel with three. If you are in a position to assist us by loaning a van (standard or Luton) for the trip, please get in touch.

In announcing the trip last week, Chris Keane said:

“As a father of two beautiful little girls, it really saddened me to read of the plight of the thousands of orphans and other children displaced by the war in Ukraine, especially with Christmas just around the corner.

“Whilst we are seeking cash donations to pay for the items listed on the Just Giving page, we would also really welcome the direct donation of some or all of the items. If you or your organisation can directly supply any of the items listed, we would be very grateful indeed.”

Any support really is appreciated by our group and by the charity in Ukraine.

If you are able to donate money, please do so via our Just Giving page.

If you can donate any of the items listed above, please contact me.

If you can support our efforts on social media, please use the hashtag #ChernivtsiChristmasAppeal.

Thank you.

ESA Risk consultant raises £4.5k for Cancer Research UK

Mario Ovsenjak, Hotel & Leisure Management Consultant, has raised £4,432 for Cancer Research UK, so far, after completing a second amateur boxing match at Manchester’s Bowlers Exhibition Centre.

A lively crowd was in place at the Ultra White Collar Boxing event to see scores of matches across two boxing rings and an MMA ‘cage’. Competitors undertake a gruelling eight-week training programme before being matched up for fight night, all in the name of charity.

After three exciting rounds, Mario unfortunately lost his fight on points, but he was in good spirits afterwards and hasn’t ruled out making a return to the ring in the future.

Here’s a snippet of the fight (Mario’s in red):

All of this is in aid of Cancer Research UK. Cancer research is an ever-important cause – statistically, one in two people will have cancer in their lifetime. Cancer Research UK works tirelessly on improving our chances of surviving all sorts of cancers.

There’s still time to make a donation on Mario’s Just Giving page.

Round 2

Mario Ovsenjak, Hotel & Leisure Management Consultant, raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK when he made his debut appearance in the boxing ring just before Christmas last year. After 3 rounds, he lost on points, unfortunately. However, Mario has taken the opportunity to add a win next to his name and to raise more money for charity – he’ll be returning to the ring on Sunday 20th March in aid of Cancer Research UK, once again.

Ahead of his first fight, Mario remarked that he was “far more likely to be seen with a glass of sherry than fighting”. Clearly, that’s starting to change. As before, Mario has entered a gruelling 8-week training and nutrition regime to ensure he’s fighting fit by the time of the event at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester.

Here’s a taste of what that entails:

All of this is in aid of Cancer Research UK (a charity supported by ESA Risk’s Mike Wright earlier in 2021). Cancer research is an ever-important cause – statistically, 1 in 2 people will have cancer in their lifetime. Cancer Research UK works tirelessly on improving our chances of surviving all sorts of cancers.

ESA Risk consultant is boxing for Cancer Research UK

Our very own Mario Ovsenjak, Hotel & Leisure Management Consultant, will be putting his body – and face – on the line in December as he enters the ring for his debut 3 rounds of boxing.

Anyone who’s met Mario, General Manager at Manchester’s glitzy, 5-star Hotel Gotham, will know he’s more at home in a 3-piece suit than boxing gloves and, as he puts it, “far more likely to be seen with a glass of sherry than fighting”.

Incredibly, Mario will be stepping into the ring after only 8 weeks of preparation. He’s following a gruelling training and nutrition regime to ensure he’s fighting fit by the time of the event at Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester on 18th December.

All of this is in aid of Cancer Research UK (a charity supported by ESA Risk’s Mike Wright earlier in the year). Cancer research is an ever-important cause – statistically, 1 in 2 people will have cancer in their lifetime. Cancer Research UK works tirelessly on improving our chances of surviving all sorts of cancers.

London to Paris Cycle Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK

Update from Mike (13th September 2021)

After 435km of cycling over 4 days from London, Mark Hendrick, Chris Newell, Adrian Howells (all Quantuma) and I made it to the finish line in Paris on Saturday 11th September.

A great experience, and we were spurred on the whole way by the generous donations to Cancer Research UK. I’m pleased to say we’ve raised more than £8,000 between us. Thank you to everyone who’s given their support.

If you’d like to donate via my Just Giving page, there’s still time.

cycling challenge

The challenge

At ESA Risk, we get involved beyond the risk landscape. Mike Wright, Investigations and Risk Management Consultant, will be embarking on a cycling challenge from 8th to 11th September 2021 as part of a campaign to raise money for charity. The cycle will take place across an impressive 435km, from London to Paris. Mike has been training intensively for weeks, taking his bike for weekly trips across the North West’s countryside, in preparation for this challenge. He will be cycling alongside Mark Hendrick, Adrian Howells and Christopher Newell from Quantuma.

The challenge is in aid of Cancer Research UK, an ever-important cause, which all donations and proceeds from the fundraiser are going towards. Cancer Research UK is about making a difference to those who need it. Although the challenge will be both physically and mentally difficult, the fundraiser will enable the funding of treatments that could be life-changing for someone.
